Since 2010, the NGO CEM has been carrying out activities to protect marine turtles in an important nesting and feeding area for hawksbill, green, leatherback and olive ridley turtles around the town of Grand Béréby, on 54 km of beaches. The presence of turtles has allowed CEM in partnership with hotels to promote ecotourism in the region and to benefit the local population. CEM also contributes to the improvement of the quality of life of the population through development projects. CEM has also acquired and placed at the disposal of the Maritime Police of Grand Béréby a patrol boat which is essential in the fight against illegal trawling and therefore in the protection of important seabed habitats (sea grass beds, corals, reefs), and of more than 20 species of sharks and rays, including at least 3 species of sharks (2 hammerheads, angels) and 3 species of guitar rays considered critically endangered.
