1) Monitoring and protection of marine turtles, sharks, rays and coastal swamp forests
Monitoring of nesting beaches, monitoring of nests and collection of eggs to protect them in hatcheries;
Monitoring of the fishing port to release turtles caught in the nets;
Promotion of ecotourism in partnership with the hotels of Grand Béréby and San Pedro;
Provision of a fully equipped patrol boat to the Maritime Police of Grand Béréby;
Carrying out the mapping, zoning, biodiversity, etc. necessary for the creation of the MPA;
All activities are carried out by young people from the villages involved in the project;
CEM usually employs 25 people for beach monitoring, 8 people for forest monitoring, 2 people for patrol boat maintenance
2) Scientific research
Support for marine and coastal ecosystem studies to assess local biodiversity and conservation status;
Support for studies on local fisheries to improve baseline knowledge on target species, status of fish stocks and capacity building;
Production of mapping, zoning, biodiversity, socio-economic and fisheries studies required for the establishment of the MPA;
Research on endangered species present in the area: guitar rays, sharks, sawfish...
3) Community conservation and sustainable development
Improve the living conditions of local populations through the installation of drinking water supply systems with solar energy, solar electrification, health campaigns with free consultations and donation of medicines, construction of health centers and primary schools;
Support local communities in the diversification of economic activities that respect nature, such as the production of sea salt, the processing of food products, the manufacture of artisanal products which are sold to tourists.
